Vilavoorkal Village Panchayat
Administrative, Geographical & Representative Information
The Vilavoorkal Panchayat, located in Vilavoorkal Village under the Nemom Assembly Constituency in Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, was formed in 1979. Covering an area of 12.02 sq. km, Vilavoorkal lies close to the boundaries of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. It shares its borders with the Vilappil, Malayinkeezhu, and Pallichal panchayats. K. Ponnappan Nadar was the first president of the panchayat.
The Malayinkeezhu–Pappanamcode road and the Kundamanbhagam–Malayinkeezhu road, both renovated in 1966–67, are the main roads here. The area covered by the Vilavoorkal Panchayat falls under the Thiruvananthapuram Parliamentary Constituency. The geography of the panchayat consists of hills, plains, paddy fields, and rocky terrains. The Karamana River flows through the panchayat. Ponds, wells, and streams are the other major water sources.
Fertile soil is found in the plains and valleys, while sandy clay soil is found in the paddy fields. Rubber is cultivated in the hilly regions, alongside some barren land. Sloped areas feature coconut palms, mango trees, and fruit-bearing trees. In the plains, coconut, banana, and tapioca are grown, along with scattered cash crops. Besides paddy, bananas and vegetables are cultivated in the paddy fields.
The panchayat receives rainfall close to the state average. Although it experiences heavy monsoons and prolonged dry spells, the highest rainfall occurs during the months of June and July.
